Charlotte was smiling all the way home. She spoke more than I had ever heard before, and even Alisa expressed amazement at her enthusiasm. She was practically skipping with each step she took, and by the time we returned home she was downright laughing.
Celeste was completely taken aback.
“Is she even the same person?” She asked blankly, as Alisa and Charlotte walked past her, hand in hand, whispering to each other in hushed giggles.
“Yes.” I told.
“What did you do?”
I leaned in and kissed her. She recoiled a bit at first out of surprise, but then raised a hand and stroked my hair.
“That’ll do it.” She said softly, as she pulled away. “I take it that you won’t be sleeping with me tonight.” She sounded a bit reproachful.
“You can watch.” I teased her, my hands entwined with hers. “And then take your turn afterward.”
‘Hmmm.’ Celeste said. “Tempting. But can you even handle three girls at once?”
I cocked an eyebrow at her and she laughed. “Okay, stupid question.” She said. “If anything the three of us couldn’t handle you.”
“I want to wait a while before we do that.” I said. “I’m not sure how comfortable she is with the idea.”
“I understand.” She said, a little quickly. “Let me know if she needs anything, alright?”
She kissed me again and then stepped away. Her hand trailing across mine as I went.
Alisa had taken off her shoes and had her feet propped up on the side of the couch when I made my way over to them. I ran my hand over her soles as she let out a giggle.
“Ticklish?” I asked her, as I sat down. On my other side Charlotte was sitting ramrod straight, looking a little bit uneasy.
“A little.” Alisa admitted. She placed her head in my lap and looked up at me. I stroked her head affectionately. “What are we doing next?””
“I’ll be flying out to California in the next couple of days for work reasons.” I said. “I’d like to spend some time with you all before I leave.”
“Scarlet’s busy, Crystal’s busy, you’re busy…” Alisa murmured. “It’s like no one wants to stick around.”
“We all have our own lives.” I said. “Celeste only just got back from vacation.”
“Hmmm.” Alisa said. “I’m glad she did.”
“I was surprised at how well you two get along.” I told her. “Crystal hates her.”
“Crystal just hasn’t gotten used to sharing.” Alisa said, yawning a little bit. She smiled a little bit sleepily. “She’ll get over it.”
I gave a look at Charlotte, wondering what she thought of this conversation. She was staring at us, with a longing expression on her face. I tilted my head.
“Touch her.”
It wasn’t a request. It was a command. Charlotte gave me a surprised look, and I smiled at her. She bit her lip, and slowly raised her hand and stroked Alisa’s head.
Alisa blinked.
“Charlotte.” She said, a little bit surprised. “Hey.”
“Hey.” Charlotte said softly. She bent down on her knees and kneeled in front of us, bending over her. “Ummm… Alisa…?”
“Yes?”
She blushed. Her brown hair fell across her face, covering her glasses.
“Is it o-okay if I… um… if I can… j-join in?”
Alisa smiled warmly.
“I would love that.” She said warmly. She touched Charlotte’s face and stroked it. Charlotte blushed.
“I’m- I’m sorry…” She said. “I-I don’t know what I’m doing.”
She certainly seemed to from what I was seeing. Her hand had drifted from Alisa’s head to her chest. Alisa let out a purr of contentment and stretched.
“Just be yourself.”
Charlotte stopped. She suddenly looked very sad.
“Myself…” She repeated. She suddenly looked uncomfortable. She pulled her hand away from her and folded it in her lap. I stared at her.
“Charlotte?” I asked, my voice gentle. “Is something the matter?”
“It’s nothing.” She said. “Don’t worry about it.”
“But I am worrying about it.” I said. I nudged Alisa and she diligently sat up. I sat down on the floor beside her and placed a hand on her leg, just above her thigh high socks. She recoiled, biting her lip at the contact. Alisa sat up, and adjusted herself. She slid next to us.
“Charlotte.” She said. “It’s not nothing.”
We were both looked at her. She averted her eyes from us, casting them downwards.
“If you’re not comfortable.” I said gently. “Maybe Alisa can take you back to your room.”
Alisa surprised me when she leaned over and crawled over me. I couldn’t quite make out her face, but she seemed to have pressed it very close to Charlotte.
“Come on.” Alisa whispered. “You want this.” I know you do.”
Charlotte bowed her head. I could hear her sniffing.
“I’m sorry.” She said. “You must think I’m a trainwreck. I must be ruining your evening.”
“No.” I said immediately, and Alisa nodded aggressively. “I would never think that.”
“It’s just…” Charlotte shuddered, wrapping her arms around her. “I… have a fear of being touched.”
I was surprised. She hadn’t seem all that particular during our walk together. Alisa elaborated.
“It’s an intimacy thing.” She said. “She grew up very touch starved. Typically if she was touched, it…”
She hesitated. “Um. Hurt.”
“I see.” I gave her a little once over. “But she had no problem touching you.”
Alisa gave me a look. “Huh?”
“Charlotte.” I said. “How about this. Instead of me touching you… how about you try touching me?”
She looked startled. “What?”
“Ooooh, that’s a good idea.” Alisa said, suddenly enthusiastic. “You can ease into it.”
She stood up and tapped my shoulder.
“Go lie down.” She instructed. “And I’ll coach her through it.” She smiled at me as I slid back onto the couch and lay down. I yawned, staring up at the ceiling, and closed my eyes.
“I’m not sure if I can…” Charlotte was whispering. “What if he doesn’t like me?”
“Charlotte, you wouldn’t be here if he didn’t like you.”
There was a bit of a scuffling sound, and then I felt the weight of someone kneeling on top of me. I could feel the fabric of her socks against my legs, and knew that it was Charlotte.
“A-alright.” She said, her voice nervous. “What… what should I do now?”
“Try running your hand along his chest.” Alisa suggested.
I sat there, my eyes closed, anticipating the touch of her hand. It came a little later than I expected. It was light and hesitant, as she slowly trailed her hand down my chest. I found myself shivering: It was oddly therapeutic.
“That… doesn’t feel too bad, does it?”
“No…”
Momentarily forgetting myself, I grabbed her thigh and squeezed. She jumped, bouncing on my lap, and the couch made a small creak.
“See Charlotte?” He likes you.” Alisa said. She sounded like she was smiling.
“I… I guess.” Charlotte said, a little reluctantly, as she shifted her weight on me. I watched her carefully. I was reminded of how socially inept I had been when I had first gotten away from my own abusive parents. She and I were the same in that regard.
“Close your eyes.” I told her.
“Huh?”
“Close your eyes.” I repeated. “And think.”
She did what she was told, as I knew she would.
“Try to think about something you enjoy.” I suggested. “Something you love. Something that you feel comfortable doing.”
“Like… reading your books?”
I tried not to look or sound smug. “If that works for you.”
She sighed.
“Reading your book made me very happy.” She said. “Knowing that you lived so close I… always… wanted to meet you.”
She trembled slightly.
“I’ve fantasized about you, you know.”
Alisa gave me a look, as if wondering how I would react to this information. Doubtless she already knew this, and doubtless this was why she was so interested in us meeting.
“Why are you so nervous now?”
“Because… I’m not good enough for someone like you.” Charlotte said. “My Mother… tells me all the time that I’m worthless. If my own Mother thinks that… it has to be true. Right?”
“It’s not.” I told her, my voice firm. Alisa smiled, and rubbed my head affectionately. “If that was true… you wouldn’t be here now. Would you?”
“I…”
Charlotte bit her lip, and then started to cry.
It took quite a while to calm her down. I called for Celeste to make us tea as Alisa and I sat comforting her on the couch. Charlotte was looking rather embarrassed by the time it was finished and Celeste brought it out for us.
“I’m sorry.” She said again. “I must be ruining your evening.”
“Of course not.” I told her. “Alisa has always been very worried about you. And now I am too.”
“You can count me in as well.” Celeste told her, as she tenderly handed her a cup of tea. “Please let me know what your tea preferences are, alright? I imagine I’ll be seeing a lot more of you in the near future.”
Charlotte smiled at her.
“Thank… thank you.” She said. She sipped her tea in quiet contemplation.
“I wish I wasn’t so overly emotional.” She confided in us, as Celeste left. “I’ve always felt… that it’s unfair to those around me. No one should care about my problems.”
“But we do care.” Alisa insisted, placing her hand on her leg.
Charlotte nodded.
“I-I know that. But… I don’t think… I’ll ever be normal.”
“You don’t have to be normal.” I told her. “You just need to be yourself.”
She gave me a shocked look, and then gave me the widest smile I had ever seen from her. She leaned forward, and without even thinking about it I kissed her.
“Heeeeey, no fair.” Alisa whined, tugging on her hair. Charlotte giggled and pulled away, and then Alisa leaned in and kissed me as well.
“You deserved that.” She whispered, winking, as she pulled away.
“And what about me?” Celeste demanded, as she came up from behind. She leaned over the side of the couch over at me, and I had to awkwardly tilt my head upward to kiss her.
The other two girls burst out into giggles, and even Celeste was smirking a little bit as she walked away.
“So… ummmm… you have several partners?” Charlotte asked me, a little apprehensively. “How… exactly does that work?”
“Just go along with it.” Alisa told her. “It’s fine. No one woman could handle him, anyway.”
“W-what do you mean?” Charlotte asked, suddenly looking very nervous.
“Oh… I’ll tell you tonight.” Alisa said, giving me a wayward glance. Doubtless she was wondering whether I would be pressuring Charlotte into sex tonight.
“You should get back to your room.” I suggested. “You’ve had a long day.”
