The Hunter’s Serenade Ch. 04
Sev and his two wives lay prone on the crest of a dune concealed from the searing sun by a cloaked tarpaulin on Aeonia–a hellish planet known for its vast deserts and harsh conditions.
“Hmm, I don’t see anyone, boss. Are you sure we’re in the right place?” Kira spoke as she peered through the opening of the tarp that looked out to the expansive desert plains with binoculars. She glanced back and forth to her datapad to ensure the coordinates they were given were right.
The three were on a job to ambush a caravan run by a band of local raiders that had been ransacking surrounding villages and refineries. It was a relatively simple job for Sev and his spouses. Although the conditions were harsh, that’s what made it such a high-paying contract. Not many were willing or capable of dragging themselves out to the middle of the searing desert.
“We’re in the right place… We just have to wait a little bit longer…” Sev muttered affirmingly as he steadily aimed down the scope of his anti-material rifle with razor-sharp focus. “You can go ahead and take a break, Kira. I’ll be fine here for the time being.”
With an obedient nod, Kira scooted her body further down the cramped space of the tarp. There was only enough room for her to crawl since the function of the tarp was to keep a low profile, not comfort. Rolling over, she reached for a satchel and retrieved her canteen.
It had been a few months since her transfer into her human body and Kira was steadily becoming more acclimated with the world around her. Thanks to her loving husband and caring sister-wife, she had been trained and prepared for everything that dangerous galaxy had to offer, allowing her to tag along in jobs rather than sitting alone on the ship and assisting them remotely. Well, the safer contracts at least. Of course, Sev still made sure that she was at his hip at all times, never letting her out of his sight.
Kira didn’t mind this of course. Although she did her best to apply their teachings in the field, she had a lot to learn before she could be fully prepared for the galaxy. She never had a longing to be purely independent, Kira found comfort that Sev was so protective over her, it showed how much a cared for her.
Sipping on her canteen, Kira took some time to observe her newly acquired attire.
Instead of the spare attire afforded by Serina’s hand-me-downs, Kira now sported a short-sleeved collared overcoat, underneath which she rocked a tactical yet stylish black shirt, revealing a hint of cleavage. Below, she wore formfitting tactical pants paired with knee-high boots. Her arms were encased in protective fingered sleeves. Kira’s entire ensemble seamlessly matched the black and gold aesthetic of Sev and Serina’s Hyperium armor, creating a cohesive and formidable trio.
Kira was delighted with her outfit. However, the process of obtaining it was particularly frustrating for Sev since she was being extremely picky. Sev, being very protective over her, wanted Kira to have the most protected attire. But at the same time, Kira wanted to look good. Which posed challenges since compromising functionality and fashionability was difficult.
As Kira hadn’t been initiated as a Valkorian warrior, the privilege of a complete set of Valkorian armor eluded her, despite her status as the wife of a prestigious clan. Sev had fortified Kira’s clothing with a Hyperium fiber mesh, making the most of the circumstances, and offering formidable protection against a wide range of weapons. While it lacked the plated armor of Valkorian warriors, the mesh provided a level of defense that surpassed any other conventional protection, ensuring Kira’s safety in the face of potential threats.
“How are you holding up, Kira?” Serina asked as she scooted down the tarp from Sev’s right.
“It’s hot,” the gray-haired wife answered bluntly, fanning herself with her hand. Serina chuckled and nodded in agreement.
“Yeah, tell me about it. I have no idea why Sev would want to drag you out here for this job. It sucks out here. And to be totally honest, I don’t why he brought me along either, I’m sure that he could have done this on his own. You and I could have been in the cool confines of our ship! Ugh, he’s inconsiderate… He must not love us…” Serina playfully ranted as she removed her helmet to drink some water.
“I can hear you…” Sev calmly remarked, sternly nudging her with his leg while remaining focused on his scope.
“Hehe, just joking, tiger…” the Serina replied with a chuckle.
“Erh, boss, why am I here?” Kira kindly queried. “It seems like my presence is not needed at this very moment. I could be more of use providing overwatch on the ship.” Sev briefly glanced at Kira on his left before returning his attention forward.
“If you are going to tag along with us on more jobs, you need to be accustomed to harsh conditions. And it’s time you put that equipment I acquired for you to use.” His blunt explanation made sense to Kira. If she were to join them more often, it would be in her best interest to experience as much of the galaxy as possible. But it also made her stomach flutter with excitement knowing that Sev trusted her, and desired her to be with him more.
“Okay, boss. I understand,” Kira simply replied, putting her canteen away and crawling back up to Sev. “Thank you for having more trust in me,” she quietly added, nestling herself into his armored body.
Sev, shaken by her loving affection, lost focus for a brief moment. Smiling under his helmet, she looked over to his second wife and gave her a loving pat on the head. Feeling an abrupt firm nudge on his right, he quickly glanced over to see Serina jealously leering at him. Although she had grown used to sharing Sev with Kira, she still couldn’t help but be envious, it was simply in her nature.
Rolling his eyes, Sev released his right hand from his weapon and place a firm hand on her butt, giving her a good squeeze. “Oh?! Hmm,” Serina purred. She always enjoyed it when Sev was provocative with her.
Sev reveled in the presence of his two lovely wives, momentarily forgetting he was on a job. “Boss! I see something!” Kira urgently called out as she looked through her binoculars again.
Shaking his head back into focus, Sev aligned himself back to his scope to find a caravan of hover vehicles trekking through the desert, dusting off plumes of sand behind them. “Kira, what do you see?” Sev inquired, adjusting his scope.
Kira zoomed her binoculars and scanned the long train of vehicles. “I uh, I see several armored escort vehicles, a few tankers, and… Oh, one big hauler.”
“Good, then we are right where we are needed,” Sev mused. “I would cover your ears, girls,” he warned, adjusting her shoulders to fire his weapon. Nodding, Serina quickly put her helmet back on, while Kira swiftly retreated deeper into the tarp to duck and cover her ears.
Aiming, Sev directed his attention to the front of the caravan. Making a few final adjustments, the bounty hunter pulled the trigger.
BANG*
A thunderous boom erupted from the hefty gun Sev wielded.
BANG*
Then another. The casings of ammunition flung into the air as Sev kept firing off shots into the distance. One by one the vehicles exploded off into the distance, lighting up the desert plain in fiery explosions.
Hearing the firing of Sev’s weapon cease, Kira slowly resumed her position, peeking out to see what was happening. “Did you get them?” she cautiously asked.
Sev focused his scope and scanned the utter carnage he had brought onto the caravan. “Hmm, everything looks good so far… Serina, do you see anything?” Serina used her visor to see for herself.
“I got a few stragglers… Should we finish them off?”
“Yeah, our employer wants no survivors,” Sev informed, reloading his hefty weapon. With a dutiful nod, Serina retrieved her sniper rifle and proceeded to pick the remaining locals off one by one. “Kira, I think it’s time you use your hunter drone,” Sev told his second wife. “It will be just like we practiced.”
“Yes, boss,” Kira obediently responded. “Just as we practiced…” she anxiously murmured to herself.
Reaching over to a nearby case, she opened it to reveal a highly advanced drone with quad plasma thrusters. Used for military applications by the Coalition, it was equipped with enough ordinance to wipe out a squad. Giving its sleek nose a gentle touch, it activated and revved up its systems.
Then, holding her right temple with two fingers, Kira closed her turquoise eyes and took a deep breath. As if on cue, the drone lifted off and zoomed toward the action. Thanks to the enhancements afforded by Dr. Foresight, Kira was able to control a wide range of electronics using only her mind. Combined with her uplink nodes grafted into her hands, she could seamlessly access and integrate herself into any device she touched.
Kira flew her drone into the chaos. Pinging targets with its advanced tracking systems, she shared the locations of any remaining targets directly into Sev and Serina’s visors. Using the drone’s weapons, she chased down and offed anyone trying to flee the scene.
A few of the raiders even tried to shoot down teh drone, but Kira was too fast and maneuverable. It wasn’t long before the remaining survivors were finally culled by the Valkorian bounty hunters.
Doing a final scan of the area, Kira recalled her drone back to their hidden position. But as she did, her sensors picked up a flying vehicle zeroing in on their location off into the distance. “We have a gunship approaching us from behind,” Kira called out catching the drone with her hands.
“Hm, that must be the backup…” Sev said with an expected tone. “Serina, could you?” he politely suggested to deal with the issue.
“Yeah, yeah, I got it,” the first wife calmly replied, putting her sniper down.
Lifting the tarp, she rolled out from its protective concealment into the searing sunlight. “Hot hot hot!” she urgently hissed to herself as she stood up on the smooth sand.
Jogging over to a strategically placed case nearby, she dusted some sand off it and unsealed the case, retrieving a Spear–a rocket-propelled anti-vehicle weapon. Loaded a missile into it and scanned her surroundings for the gunship. “Augh, where the hell is it…” she annoyingly muttered as the overbearing light from the sun hindered her vision.
Tapping the side of her helmet, she switched her visor to a dark setting so she could see better. “Ah, there you are…” she muttered, spotting a dark spec quickly approaching them in the bright sky.
Getting on one knee, Serina aligned her sights on the ship and awaited the auto-lock to engage. She waited and waited for the Spear to catch the target, but to her annoyance, nothing was happening.
“Serina, the gunship is still coming our way. Did you shoot it down yet?” Kira said to her through the comms.
“Tsk, I’m working on it… Just give me a second…” Serina frustratedly replied, struggling to get her weapon to lock on to her intended target.
“Serina, status,” Sev chimed in, curiosity and urgency underlined his voice.
“Argh, the stupid thing won’t lock on!” she spat, smacking the Spear on its side in an attempt to make it work. “I thought you said this thing works?!”
“What? It should work. Hmm, perhaps the heat is messing with its systems. Or maybe it’s the sand clogging up its systems?” Sev began to blabber hypotheses of Serina’s technical difficulties.
“Hey, tiger, right now is not the right time to figure out what’s wrong! Could you know, help me out?? We’re sitting ducks out here and I’m pretty sure that gunship can see us now!” Serina urgently exclaimed.
Erupting from the tarp, Sev hastily made his way to her. At the same time, Serina saw Kira jump down the dune for cover.
Kneeling next to her, Sev proceeded to inspect the Spear. “Did you load the missile into it?” he queried.
“Yes, of course I did!” Serina hissed, flashing a bemused glare at him through her visor. “Sev, it’s getting closer!”
“Shit, hang on…”
As the seconds passed, the gunship only got closer. Serina’s heart raced knowing that they must be in weapons range now. It was only a matter of time before it opened fire on them. “Sev??” she called out, waiting for any news on his end.
“One moment…” he reiterated, fiddling with god knows what.
The gunship was now more than a mere spec. Serina could make out the weapons it carried. Her stomach sunk as she observed the ship make a sudden course adjustment toward their direct location; if it didn’t see them then, it certainly did now!
“Screw it, I’m eyeballing it,” Serina declared as she lined her sights at the gunship’s predicted trajectory.
“What? Hang on! I’m almost…” Sev tried to say, quickening his efforts but to no use.
Making precise adjustments to her aim, Serina fired off the missile. She watched as it propelled in the sky towards her target. But as she did, she felt herself being picked up from her feet. She gasped finding herself in Sev’s arms making a bolt down the dune where Kira was.
As she was carried off, she watched behind them to see if she made her mark. “Come on…” she anxiously murmured to herself. Her amber eyes widened with glee spotting the gunship explode in the air.
Once on the cover of the dune, Sev put Serina down. “Yes! I got it! Did you see that?!” the first wife cheered, gaily tugging at Sev’s arm.
“Huh?” Sev peeked over the crest to find fire and debris falling from the sky. “Hm, what a hit…” he uttered, impressed; yet another reason why he was attracted to her.
Serina triumphantly nodded to herself. “Mhm, you’re lucky your wife is a good shot!” Then upon realization of Sev carrying her off to safety, she angrily leered at him, offended that he didn’t trust her. “Hey, what the hell?? Did you think I would miss??”
“Just being cautious, love,” Sev chuckled, deflecting her encroaching anger. “Good job.”
Serina pursed her lips and let out a resigned sigh. “Thanks, tiger,” she chuckled.
“AHH! Help!” Kira suddenly called out from behind.
Sev and Serina urgently swiveled their head around to just find their cute companion helplessly sliding down the side of the dune. “Help me!” she shouted again, flailing her arms about, desperately trying to keep herself from sliding further down the dune. Joining each other in a discrete laugh; they found her predicament a little cute.
“Hey! I can see you two laughing!” Her voice grew more faint as she slid further away.
“Coming, Kira,” Sev called out to his second wife. “Serina, could you gather out things while I help her out?” Serina smiled and nodded.
With everything packed and ready to go, Serina turned to see Sev meeting the crest of the dune with Kira firmly in his arms. Settling his second wife down. “Erh, thanks, boss…” Kira abashedly said, beating the sand off her clothes. Sev amusingly shook his helmeted head and helped shake the remaining sand off her clothes.
“Good job, my lovelies. We make one hell of a team, don’t we?” Sev spoke contently as he went over to assist Serina with their equipment.
“I mean, we might have almost died if it weren’t for me…” Serina mumbled, her voice tinged with vanity and annoyance at his doubt from earlier. Sev sighed and pulled her into an intimate embrace.
“And that, I am grateful…” he calmly thanked.
Serina couldn’t help but smile warmly. He always had a way with his words. “Hm, yeah… we do make a good team…” the first wife concededly admitted with a warm smile.
In the corner of his eye, Sev spotted Kira awkwardly watching them off to the side. Jealously and exclusion emanated from her. Lifting his arm, he gestured for his gray-haired wife to join them. Her turquoise eyes happily sprang open and she wasted no time running to them.
“Do I make a good addition to your team?” Kira hummed into his armored chest, reveling in their three-way hug.
“Yes, Kira. You did great,” her loving husband replied. “Although, I think we need to stay away from dunes,” he teased. Kira blushed heavily while Serina broke out in laughter.
“Hey! That’s not funny, Serina!” the second wife whined.
“Sorry, sorry… it’s not…” Serina tried to retract herself. “But maybe a little…” Kira’s brows scrunched up and she glared at Serina.
“Enough of that, girls. We should hurry up to the ship before the Sand Whales come,” Sev casually suggested.
Serina’s amber eyes widened. “Eh?! Sand Whales!” She broke from their embrace. She scanned their surroundings in a panic. Rapidly tip-toeing on the sand.
“I wouldn’t do that if I were you, they are attracted to rhythmic vibrations,” Sev playfully warned, pulling away from Kira.
“EEK!” Serina immediately jumped into his arms. “We have to leave! Go! Take me to the ship right now!”
Sev and Kira joined in a unified chuckle. Serina’s cheeks became beet red under her helmet. “Ugh, hey! Don’t laugh!” she spat at her husband. Then turning to her sister-wife she continued, “Kira, you better not be laughing!”
Kira closed one eye and tauntingly stuck her tongue out at her. “Wait…” Serina muttered in sudden realization. “Are you guys messing with me??” Sev offered no response, cementing her conclusion. “Tsk, I had enough of you! Put me down!” she exclaimed, beating on his chest with her fists and kicking her legs out.
But Sev remained firm, refusing to abide by her demands. “You know, Sev isn’t joking,” Kira remarked. “There are Sand Whales here on Aeonia.” Serina’s eyes widened and she quickly clung tighter to Sev. “But they went extinct due to overhunting about a century ago.” Although Kira appeared naive, she was incredibly intelligent due to her being a former AI construct.
“Well, is it possible that some of them may still be alive??” Serina cautiously asked, skeptical about Kira’s explanation.
Kira shook her head. “No no… It’s simply not possible. A Sand Whale hasn’t been seen since they were first declared extinct,” she answered, confidently pointing her finger up.
As she finished speaking, the area of the aftermath of their ambush erupted as a massive creature the size of a cargo freighter broke through the sand and swallowed up the burning wrecks and corpses littering the desert plain.
The trio froze in utter stupefaction witnessing the awesome force of nature revealing itself to them. The sand rumbled beneath them as the immense Sand Whale submerged back into the sand, leaving no trace of the caravan behind.
The Valkorians just stood there, attempting to process what just happened. “Well… Let’s get out of here, yeah?” Sev uttered, retaining his distress.
Serina and Kira silently nodded, too rattled to speak. Within a short time, the trio found themselves safely back onto the ship, on their way to collect their reward…

Exiting the palace of the Spice Lord who had hired them, Sev held a mysterious box as a gift for his efforts. “Hm, I was expecting this lord to be your stereotypical greedy bastard, but he wasn’t so bad…” Serina said as she clasped her hands behind her helmeted head, strolling beside her husband and sister-wife.
“Drag’ul is a businessman above anything else. As long as you don’t get in his way, he will not cause you trouble,” Sev explained, checking the wired credits to his account on his tacpad. “Plus it helps that I ran a handful of jobs for him in the past. So I would like to believe we’re on good terms…”
“It says here that Drag’ul runs a drug and sex trafficking ring across several systems within this sector of the galaxy… That probably explains his lavish palace…” Kira muttered, reading through her datapad as Sev carefully had to redirect his gray-haired lover from hitting a nearby pole.
“Welp never mind then,” Serina took back her previous comment. “He is your stereotypical greedy bastard.”
