Her Freshman Year
“Mom, Dad!” Andrea called as she came in through the front door, slamming it on the way.
Jeez, thought Alan, she’s like a fucking herd of elephants, always barging through things if they are not smart enough to get out of her way.
Andrea had always been active, sports were like a second life for her. The more physical the sport, the more she wanted in. She was really upset that she wasn’t tall enough to make it to the WNBL, but she was tenaciously held her spot on her high school team. She was also a track and field star, anything over the 5,000 meter mark and she just shone, cross country, marathon and while not tall, she could still throw a mean javelin. Her room was adorned with medals and trophies from throughout her school years, and college hadn’t slowed her one bit. Where she got this from, Alan didn’t know. There was a distant cousin who once competed in the Olympics, a hurdler, but that was the closest anyone in their family came to sports. That didn’t explain her aggressive approach to everything though, she was just so competitive, but fuck knows where she got that streak from.
It had gotten worse over the last few years when she decided that she wanted to add Taekwondo to her sporting ventures. Already she had reached 2nd Kup in just four years. How the hell she scheduled all this as well as earning good grades at school was far beyond Alan’s understanding, but she did. Now, in college, her grades were also high. He sighed, this came at having no boyfriend, well almost, there was one kid but he didn’t last long and there hasn’t been anyone since.
“Mom! Dad!” she called again.
“Yeah, yeah! In the kitchen.” Alan replied, “Shout out again, I’m not sure Mrs Kirby heard you!” referring to the older lady at the end of the street who was seriously hard of hearing.
Coming into the kitchen, sitting at the table Andrea tossed her bag on the floor and dumped herself into a chair.
“You know, your mother wondered why I bought these heavy chairs for the kitchen table.” Alan said, “Self protection, I said, I didn’t want to be going out buying new chairs three or four times a year.”
“Agh jeez Dad, you think you might get a new line at some point,” Andrea replied.
“Oldie but a goodie,” he laughed, “Now what is so important you gotta make such a noise about?” He lifted his coffee and sipped it.
“Yeah, when Mom gets here.” Rooting around her bag, Andrea pulled out her drink bottle and took a large swallow.
“So how was training?” She had just come from her Taekwondo academy.
“Good. My instructors think I could be a black belt before the end of the year.”
“In four years, a black belt? Wow, hell of an achievement.”
“They want me to compete in the nationals later this year, but I don’t know. It’s first week of July in Texas, but I don’t know if I want to go to Texas. Nowhere near a beach and in summer.”
“Hi Andrea,” Mom said as she came into the kitchen. “What’s all the fuss about?”
“Andrea’s saying that she might be a black belt before the end of the year and they want her to go to the National titles in July.”
“That’s wonderful, darling,” Mom hugged her daughter.
“Yeah, but that’s not really what I wanted to talk about.”
“Oka-a-y,” Alan said cautiously, “So what is it that you want to talk about?”
“Well-” she said, and stopped. “Mom- Dad-” She stopped again.
“Come on darling,” Mom said, “This isn’t like you, whatever it is it can’t be so bad you can’t get it out there.”
“I dunno Mom,” she said quietly, “you might not-” she stopped again.
Alan reached over and took Andrea’s hand, “Come on babe, whatever this is, it is really eating you up. Is this why you’ve sort of been so busy lately you haven’t been around much?”
She nodded.
“Okay,” he said, gently, “It’s an issue of trust isn’t it?” He knew his daughter and he was wondering if an earlier speculation was right.
She nodded again. “And you don’t know how we’re going to react.” A statement. Andrea nodded again.
“You’re pregnant!” Mom cried, “Oh my God, you’re going to have a baby!”
“NO,” Andrea responded emphatically, “No Mom, I’m not pregnant. Not that at all.”
“You want to go overseas to compete and it’s going to cost a lot?”
“No,” Andrea replied, “Look, this is not easy, please, let me get to it in my own way, okay?”
“Okay babe,” Alan said, “Sorry, but this sounds serious.”
“It is, Dad,” she stopped.
Alan looked at Minnie and raised an eyebrow as Minnie took a breath to say something. She recognized the signal and didn’t, waiting patiently.
“Mom, Dad, erm,” she faltered again, “Look, I want-, um, I am- um-”
Alan had never known Andrea to be at a loss for words, ever. Sometimes she just said too much so whatever was bothering her, she was really unsettled by it. He squeezed her hand, gently, encouraging her to get it out there and he thought he knew what was coming.
“I’m gay!” she finally said.
“WHAT?” cried Minnie, “YOU’RE GAY?” Alan sat back, but didn’t let go of her hand.
Tears were forming in Andrea’s eyes as she nodded.
“NO! NO! NO!” cried Minnie. “You’re not GAY!”
“YES MOM, I AM!” Andrea cried back.
“RIGHT STOP! THE PAIR OF YOU!” Alan called, then, “Minnie, stop, take a breath. Get a hold of yourself.” He could see she was shaken, and Alan knew when she was like this, she had one of two reactions, flight or fight! Didn’t look like she was going to run here, he knew. “Not helpful Minnie,” he said, perhaps a little sterner than he should have, but Minnie did stop. She knew Alan well enough to know that he wasn’t easily upset or fazed, trusting his judgment here. She felt tears welling, beginning to flow down her cheeks.
How could their daughter be gay? She thought, What the fuck happened here? Why didn’t I see this coming? The ungrateful bitch- after everything we’ve done for her and she says she’s gay?
Alan looked at Minnie, he knew what was likely going through her mind right now and it wasn’t going to be positive. Wondering why she wasn’t at least suspicious that their daughter may be dancing to a different tune. There was enough evidence to suggest something was different, that’s for sure. “That’s a pretty big thing to come out with babe,” he said, quietly, “So thank you for trusting us enough to let us know.” Again, he squeezed Andrea’s hand, trying to let her know she was okay.
“How do you know you’re gay?” Minnie asked, clinging at a half remembered straw from her own adolescence, “Could it be just a passing fad?”
“No Mom,” Andrea replied, “I have tried sex with a couple of guys, and it just does nothing for me.”
“Well, you gotta learn,” Minnie said, “Sometimes take practice and patience, especially with boys, they’re learning too.”
“One of them wasn’t a boy Mom, he was older and should have known what he was doing. I admit it was better, but it still just left me cold.”
“So, what happened that made you think of a woman?” Alan asked.
“One of the girls in the academy is gay-”
“So this bitch seduced you and-”
“Not helping Minnie!” Alan said, firmly. She stopped. “Look, my love. I know this is something of a shock, certainly unexpected, but we gotta hear her out, then trust we are adult enough to accept what she is saying. We’re not the ones with the emotions here, remember?”
Minnie was startled that Alan would remember that. Before they were married, Minnie had another boyfriend and when she met Alan, she eventually broke it off with the guy. He and Alan had not been friends but they had known each other from school. The guy took it really hard, and in one conversation Minnie told Alan that they really did need to respect this guy’s emotions, they were his, not theirs. Minnie nodded and while not happy, kept her thoughts to herself. Later though, this was going to be a topic of discussion.
“So what happened,” Alan asked.
“She kissed me.”
“And?”
“And I just knew it was right. It felt right.”
“So anything else?”
“NO!” Andrea denied, “Nothing.”
Alan knew she was lying. He always knew when she was lying. Mom didn’t get it often, but Dad always knew.
“Okay, love. Look, it’s all new and different. Life is making hard decisions sometimes, then living with the consequences. While I’m surprised, Mom is not happy.” Alan looked at Minnie and could see her struggling with it. Andrea nodded and Alan gave Andrea the look that said we’ll discuss this later, when Mom is not around. This was a strategy they had worked out a long time ago when they realized that Mom was going to be a serious stumbling block to Andrea’s pursuit of sporting stardom. “So give us some time to get used to the idea and we can talk some more.”
“You’re just 19 and you want to make a decision like this that will affect the rest of your life, Andrea?” Minnie asked.
“Mom, no, I’m not making any decision, my body is telling me.” Andrea stated. Minnie just ran from the room, crying.
“Oh, fuck! Mom!” Andrea cried to Minnie’s retreating back.
“That went well, I thought,” Alan said, “Give her time, she’ll come around.”
Alan looked at his daughter and gently asked her, “Is there something else you want to tell me?”
“I had sex with Bobby Pine, and it was a disaster, both times. I thought that it was awful because we didn’t know anything. It hurt, but worse, it was humiliating,” Andrea said, “I told myself it would get better but the second time was just as awful, but more humiliation with less pain. I really thought we couldn’t have been doing it right, sex wasn’t supposed to be like this. Well, I didn’t think so.”
“No, you’re right, sex is not like that at all, it’s love and sharing and joy and giving and taking and lots of things all rolled into one. But it’s not humiliating. You’re not on the Pill, so I assume you practiced safe sex?”
Andrea nodded, “Yeah, I told Bobby he had to use a condom or it wasn’t happening.”
Smart thinking, Alan thought as he nodded. “And the other guy?”
“No, not telling you who. Just he was older and a lot more experienced. Got me to do things I wouldn’t have even thought of but it was even worse in some ways. No pain, but just as humiliating, left me cold, so never happening again.”
