Amos did accept the invitation to work on Jasper’s farm and he did so for a few years, growing the business substantially before the urge to explore the world overtook him. Jasper was saddened when his brother left and reluctantly hired a local boy to help him.
When our children were nearing adolescence, the farm boy came running into the house and told me he had found my Jasper dead in the field. I had rushed to him, but there was nothing to be done. I could not find a doctor to come for him as we had been shunned long ago, and eventually the boy and my Henry had to load my husband into the wagon and bury him in the furthest corner of our land.
I could not bear to live without my Jasper, my savior, and I found myself surrounded by the walls of my house being cared for by my daughter.
I was convinced that love would never find me again, or so I thought then. I did not feel alive for many years, feeling his loss tremendously every minute since his passing. That is until the day my son and daughter took up mine and Jasper’s marriage bed and brought beautiful grandchildren into my world. My heart was once again full as I watched my children dote on each other, unashamedly displaying their love for the world to see. A love I knew all too well.
Jasper and I had not dared to be so brazen as our children, a regret I hold deep in my heart to this day. Our children, our achingly beautiful children, were never accepted by the townsfolk. They had known nothing but antipathy and strife, which Jasper and I tried in vain to shield them from. But they found solace with each other and this brought great peace to me, as it would have to my dear Jasper if he had lived to see it.
As the years trudged on, the lonely walls around my heart crumbled and I found myself longing for someone to fill me as my uncle once had. The fates, which had been so kind to me once, heard my pleas and brought me a new love. It seemed that the moment I opened my legs for him, I was full with his child. My womb was not barren after all. I had only needed a new virile seed to fill me.
