“Rise and shine, Alice, ri-i-i-ise and shine-e-e-e-e!” yelled Finn barging into her room.
“Ugh!”
“What a lovingly warm summer day! Look how high is the sun already!” the curtains were drawn flooding the room with the light.
“You’re the worst.”
“Get up! Gonna get up, get up get u-u-u-u-up!” this cry was from his favorite song, at least when it came to waking his sister up.
Alice tried to kick her brother with her eyes closed but missed. Finn used this opportunity to tickle her bare sole causing her to shriek and jump up.
“I hate you so much, big brother!” said Alice sounding almost sincere.
“Yeah-yeah. Coffee’s freezing, and I may have left you some beans. Come before I change my mind!” Finn left, closing the door behind.
Alice considered falling back, but the sleep was already gone. Despite wearing full-body pajamas she still wrapped herself in a blanket before slipping into her fuzzy slippers.
Only then did she rise up and stand by the window. Warm summer day indeed – slightly above zero degrees Celsius – evident by the fact it wasn’t snowing. The brown and gray vastness of arctic tundra was all she could see up to the horizon.
That “The Sun Is Up” joke got old before they were born. Everybody knows that at this latitude the sun isn’t going down the whole day – leaving you with 24 hours of sunlight every day. That is novel for the first few days and then gets infuriating.
At least it is so in the summer. The sun wouldn’t rise here at all in the winter.
In the canteen, Alice kept throwing glances at her brother while eating her dose of canned beans and drinking a still-warm cup of three-in-one coffee.
Finn appeared enthusiastic – hopping around, joking, stoking a fire in the small furnace that warmed up their research facility. At first glance, it could seem like a normal day – by the weird standards of their family.
There was way too much force in Finn’s enthusiasm.

Their father was an eccentric climate scientist. Their whole life was a constant ride from one extreme place to the other, following him gathering data. The numbers he obtained were then used by more renowned scientists – to forecast global warming, cooling, prosperity, or a total environmental disaster depending on whichever industry decided to “donate to science” more. Their father, however, was proud of not being a sellout.
Their mom, although respecting his convictions, groaned that it would be good to sell something – at least once in a while. This stoic woman saved her husband’s life more times than she cared to count, all while ensuring that their kids would always have decent food, shelter, school, tutors, and hobby groups – no matter where they were. Even if that required her to reach out to local authorities in a language she didn’t know, or to nag her husband to apply for a grant.
Big brother Finley was 23, and currently studying mechanical engineering in Europe – dreaming of landing a boring stable 9-to-6 desk job. He was tall and had chestnut hair and gray eyes. Finn wasn’t afraid of manual labor since childhood, went to the gym, and was muscular and extremely outgoing. He made friends all over the globe, and conquered hears of local beauties in just as many places.
His sister Alice was 19, she was more closed one, and she was preparing for exams to study international law in the same city as Finn. With dad never having time for them, and mom constantly tired – her brother was the only person she could rely upon her whole life, and she hoped to stay together even in university – to help each other, or maybe even share the rent.
The two could bicker all day long. Finn teased Alice. Alice shouted through the walls when Finn’s yet-another-girlfriends’ moans were too loud for her to sleep. Either of them could pull a prank on the other one, but when it mattered – they would always be there for each other.

“I’d kill for a bowl of greens,” said Alice during the lunch. It was rice with spam again.
“Throw in some oranges and you have a getaway driver!” joked Finn.
“I think I’ll need a second vacation after this one.”
“Oh yeah! A sunny day, a warm beach, pina colada in one hand, and a hot local in a bikini in the other!”
Normally Alice would have said something back – like calling her brother a dog, but not this time. After a brief pause, she inhaled sharply but still said nothing. Finn threw a quick glance at her. The two finished eating in silence and went back to their chores.
The station felt small, but they both preferred to avoid going outside due to the potential of meeting polar bears.

Even though Finn had his own room in the dorm by now, and Alice was trying to apply for one, their father still got them to help him out on one more adventure. A short maintenance shift during a brief summer on a research station beyond the polar circle.
Of course, it was their father who had collapsed with an acute case of a sickness they couldn’t diagnose on their own, and required urgent medical attention. The rescue helicopter had a place for only one extra person.
It said a lot about their family, that their mother felt way more comfortable leaving her children alone in the middle of a literal nowhere, rather than letting her husband wander on his own through the hospital.
But even Alice agreed they would be fine with her brother – most of the work was already done, and they had enough supplies. She could use the place to study without distractions, and all they had to do was wait for a research vessel to come pick them up.

It was late evening (with the sun shining bright outside). Finn was sitting in a radio room when Alice knocked and entered. Installing a satellite for internet connection wouldn’t fit the expedition budget, so the only source of communication with the external world was a long-wave radio, where they had a few news channels and infrequent communications from their parents.
This was normally her brother’s domain, as Alice was not as interested in all the technical stuff, but Finn greeted her and offered her to take a seat.
“How’s the news?” Alice asked. She remained standing, leaning on a door frame, with her arms crossed.
“Oh, great! Yes, everything’s great… No problem!”
“No worries?”
“Absolutely!”
“Finn. Cut the bullshit.”
“What?” Finn did his best impression of confusion, but it wouldn’t fool his sister.
“What is wrong?! Tell me!”
“Nothing is wrong, Alice, why…”
“CUT! THE BULLSHIT!”
“Research vessel will come pick us soon, and…”
“I’m not stupid, Finn!” shouted Alice. “It was supposed to come eight days ago already!”
“There’s a repair…” started Finn, but by now Alice wouldn’t be stopped. All the build-up emotions had finally broken the dam of her calmness, and now she was screaming and crying.
“Don’t lie to me Finnley, I’ve seen it in your eyes…”
“Alice!”
“…that you’ve been hiding something, that you aren’t telling me the truth!”
“Alice, everything…”
“Don’t you fucking dare saying that, I see that it’s not! Is it our father?! Is he… not well?”
“He’s fine. It’s like I’ve been saying…”
“Is the help not coming?! Are we stranded here?! I’ve seen the map, if we cross the island, if we make a canoe, then there’s a village on a continent…”
“Are you out of your mind?!”
“We can cross the sea! I know it! Because I refuse! I will not!” Alice panted, tears rolling from her eyes.
“IT’S THE FUCKING PORN, ALICE! I lost my porn stash!”
“Finn, what are you even saying?!”
“Remember that hard drive that busted? The one I couldn’t fix? There was a hidden volume with my porn collection…”
“Our dad is safe?”
“It’s like I fucking said! He’s recovering, the surgery went okay, he knew it might be needed beforehand, but still chose this expedition because of course he did!”
“And… we’re getting off the island? Do you have a fix on…?”
“I didn’t want to upset you, but yeah, old vessel’s in repairs, some trouble with spare parts and it’s no one’s problem… But our mom is on it, so she should come through!”
“And if they won’t?” food rations weren’t a problem, but Alice would miss the admission deadline if they got stuck here for a full month.
“If it isn’t – there will be an icebreaker with tourists returning from the Northern Pole. It’s one of those large Russian ones, but who cares? Just don’t debate politics there, and we’ll get off on the first port and fly back to civilization! We’re getting off this island either way, and you will still be back in time for your admission exams!”
“You… sure that everything’s fine?” Alice finally calmed down a bit, comforted not even by the information, but by the confidence in her brother’s voice.
“It’s like I said. Yes. Everything – is absolutely fine.”
“Okay. Okay,” Alice wiped her tears and turned to leave, but then paused and giggled. “I’m sorry, what was it you said? Something about porn?”
“Oh no.”
“No really? My big brother was so agitated because he lost his porn stash?”
“Yeah-yeah. Real funny.”
“Come on, I was losing my mind thinking that something terrible has happened, and all this time it was about you not being able to rub one out?”
“Look, can we just pretend…”
“Oh no, not a chance!” Alice laughed, “That’s that old gray drive, right? And our dad was wondering if he got scammed with its volume.”
“Yeah, there’s a utility that can make…”
“If I recall, a whole hundred gigs were missing! Mom argued we should send it back, you know? Just what exactly were you storing there?”
“Well, a bit of this, a bit of that…” normally confident Finn looked embarrassed, which only encouraged Alice to press further.
