In a hotel room, 23-year-old Maya Cruz sits on the edge of a bed. Still gotta get up early to go to Universal tomorrow.” Opening the lid, she laughs out, “Can’t believe I’m finally getting to go after all these years.”

Nick grins. “What’s got me in shock is you actually being here. I mean, it’s been 5 years.” Shaking his head, he adds, “Still can’t believe your new orders have you actually moving back to Georgia with us.”

“Well, get used to it, little brother,” Maya says as she produces two amber bottles from the melting ice. Closing the lid, she heads back to the bed. “Because, besides this little Florida family vacation, you’re going to be seeing a lot more of me. Well, until the military decides to shuffle me around again.”

Their parents, Patty Wallace, a nurse and, Carlos Cruz, a retired Army veteran, had met after Carlos’ motorcycle accident. After tending to him while he recovered the use of his legs, they had quickly fallen in love and remarried when Maya was 17 and Nick was a young 13. The family only had 1 year together before Maya had left for Air Force Basic Training. Since then, the Aircraft Armament Systems specialist has lived and worked in Washington and Guam. Still, having come straight here from her old duty station in Guam, she will only be settling in Robins after this 5 day vacation with her family is over. And today is really special, because it marks the first time Nick and Maya have seen each other in person in 5 long years. It mostly has to do with Maya skipping trips home to save money to buy her first house. Well, that and Nick always forgoing trips with his parents to go see her for swim meets, part-time work at the local dentist (as a receptionist), and getting ready for and going to college. “Me too,” Nick agrees as he searches for the title.
