“I thought I was going through with this to get even with him.”
“But?”
“I didn’t realize how much I have been wanting to do just this.”
I looked down at her, at the top of her head.
“Are you serious?”
She looked up at me. “Why wouldn’t I be?”
“I guess dreams do come true.” I smiled like the happy fool I was. I moved to kiss her again, but she gave me a mischievous little grin and turned her head first, looking back out at the room and sitting up straighter again.
“What happens now?” I finally asked her.
From another pocket, Raquel produced a whole handful of tissues, along with the empty condom wrapper, and I gathered up our ‘evidence’ in a ball and clutched it all in my hand.
“Now we leave.” she announced. “We lock up, go back out to our cars and…”
“And act like this never happened?”
She turned those deep brown eyes on me. “…we go back to town. And maybe, real soon, someone moves all his crap out of my place.”
It was my turn to give a slow, spreading smile. “So someone else can move his…in?”
She smiled slightly and looked around at the cabin, dust winking in the sunbeams that came in through the windows where we sat. With that light behind her, she glowed like a goddess. She felt like one. She tasted like one.
“Well, maybe not. Maybe if someone decides he actually wants to buy a place and settle down, there’d be somewhere for…my stuff?” she turned back and grinned at me with just the lightest touch of uncertainty and longing in her voice.
“Oh, don’t worry…” I paused, my own voice unsteady with passion. “I think I found every reason to stay.”
We sat there side by side and staring at each other until Raquel reached out one immaculate fingertip and held it under my chin, looking me right in the eye before she kissed me again.
“I told you you would like it here.”
