As the sun began to set, we stopped the truck on a hill overlooking the valley. The sky was painted with shades of pink and orange, and a warm breeze was blowing through the air. Beth turned to me, her eyes searching mine. “This is amazing,” she said softly. I nodded, feeling a lump form in my throat. “Yeah, it is.” And then, without another word, we leaned in to kiss. It was even better than the first time, and I could feel my heart swelling with joy. As we pulled away, we looked into each other’s eyes, and I knew that this was the start of something special. Something that would change my life forever.
A few days later Beth greeted me as I came out of the bunk house early in the morning. She threw her arms around me and starting kissing me. Oh that mouth… I could kiss her all day. It was an amazing new experience for me. As Beth and I were lost in the moment of our kiss, I suddenly heard a loud voice behind us. “What the fuck is going on here?!” Joe’s voice boomed, causing us both to jump and pull away from each other. I turned to face him, my heart racing with fear. “Joe, I … ,” I started, but he didn’t let me finish. He charged at me, his fists flying, and before I knew it, we were grappling with each other on the ground. We rolled around in the dirt, trading punches and grunts, both of us desperate to come out on top. I don’t know how long we fought for, but eventually, I managed to get the upper hand. As Joe and I tussled on the ground, trading punches and blows, I was too lost in my anger and confusion to hear Beth’s horrified gasps. It wasn’t until I heard her yell “Stop it, stop it right now!” that I pulled away from the fight, panting and bleeding. I stood up and looked down at Joe, who was sprawled on the ground, breathing heavily. He looked up at me with a mixture of anger and pain, and for a moment, I didn’t know what to do. But then I saw Beth rushing towards me, her face twisted with concern. “Are you okay?” she asked, taking my hand and leading me away from Joe. I nodded, still shaking from the fight. “I’m sorry,” I said, looking down at my bloody knuckles. “I don’t know what came over me.”
Beth put a hand on my shoulder, and I felt a jolt of electricity shoot through my body. She looked at me with concern, fussing over my cuts and bruises. “I’m sorry about Joe,” she said, her voice soft and comforting. “He’s been going through a lot lately, and he can be hot-headed sometimes.” I nodded, grateful for her kindness. “I understand,” I said, wincing as I applied the ice pack to my swollen eye. “I just wish it didn’t have to come to this.” Beth sighed, and for a moment, we stood there in silence, the sound of the cattle in the distance providing a backdrop to our thoughts. I looked at her, and I felt something stir. But before I could say anything, we heard the sound of footsteps approaching, and we turned to see Sue, Joe and Beth’s mom, standing in front of us, her face twisted in anger. “What in God’s name is going on here?!” she yelled, her voice shaking with rage. “I leave you boys alone for one afternoon, and you end up beating the crap out of each other?!” I hung my head, ashamed and embarrassed. But to my surprise, Sue didn’t ask me to leave. Instead, she took us both by the shoulders and led us inside, fussing over our injuries and scolding us both for our behavior. None of us told Sue what the fight had been about. Maybe she knew but she did not let on. As we sat there, nursing our bruises and feeling the weight of Sue’s disappointment, I couldn’t help but steal glances at Beth. She was sitting next to me, her face etched with concern, and I felt a warmth spread through my chest.
After the fight, things were tense at the ranch. Joe and I kept our distance from each other, and Sue made sure to keep a watchful eye on us. Beth, on the other hand, seemed to be avoiding me, and I couldn’t help but feel like I had ruined our relationship. But life on the ranch went on, and we all had work to do. We spent our days tending to the cattle, fixing fences, and taking care of the ranch. It was hard work, but it was satisfying, and it gave me a sense of purpose that I had never felt before.
One day, as we were sorting cattle, Joe’s horse got spooked and threw him off. He landed awkwardly, and we could all hear the sickening snap of bone as his leg broke. We rushed over to him, and I felt a surge of fear and panic as I saw the pain etched on his face. Sue quickly drove Joe to the hospital in town, leaving Beth and me to catch his horse and finish sorting the cattle. As we rode out into the field, I could feel the tension between us. But I knew that we had work to do, and that we had to put our differences aside. We caught the horse, and I could see the fear in its eyes as we led it back to the ranch. Beth and I worked in silence, the sound of the cattle’s lowing providing a backdrop to our thoughts. As we finished up, I could see the exhaustion etched on Beth’s face. “You look tired,” I said, trying to break the silence. “Do you want me to take care of the rest?” Beth shook her head, a small smile crossing her lips. “I’m fine,” she said. “Just a little sore.” I nodded, feeling a surge of protectiveness towards her. “Well, why don’t you go take a break, then?” I suggested. “I’ll take care of everything.” Beth hesitated, then nodded, a grateful look in her eyes. “Thanks,” she said, her voice soft. “You’re a good friend.” I watched as she walked away, her long hair swaying in the breeze. For a moment, I couldn’t help but think about how beautiful she was, and how much I wanted to be more than just friends. But then I shook my head, trying to banish those thoughts from my mind. Joe was my friend, and Beth was his sister. I couldn’t risk ruining our friendship and causing even more problems on the ranch. As the day wore on, I finished up the work, feeling a sense of satisfaction at the job well done. And when Sue and Joe finally came back, I felt a sense of relief wash over me.
When Joe came home from the hospital with his leg in a cast, we all knew that things would be even harder on the ranch. With him out of commission, there was even more work for the rest of us to do. But we all pitched in and did our best, determined to keep the ranch running smoothly. As the days wore on, Beth and I slowly started talking again. At first, it was just small talk – about the weather, the cattle, anything to fill the silence. But then, one night, as I sat alone in the bunkhouse, Beth came to see me. At first, I was surprised to see her. We hadn’t really talked much since the fight, and I wasn’t sure what she wanted. But then, as she sat down beside me, I could see the pain in her eyes, and I knew that she was hurting. “I’m sorry,” she said, her voice soft. “I know things have been tough between us lately, and I just wanted to make things right.” I nodded, feeling a lump in my throat. “I’m sorry too,” I said. “I didn’t mean to hurt you.” Beth shook her head, a small smile crossing her lips. “It’s okay,” she said. “I know you didn’t mean to.” And so we talked, for hours, about everything and nothing. As the night wore on, I could see the exhaustion etched on Beth’s face. “You look tired,” I said, trying to break the silence. “Do you want me to walk you back to the house?” Beth hesitated, looking down at her feet. After a few more seconds of consideration, Beth finally agreed. We stepped out of the bunkhouse and made our way towards the house, hand in hand.
As we walked, I couldn’t help but feel a sense of nervousness and excitement. When we reached the house, we stood on the porch, gazing up at the stars. The quiet of the night was broken only by the occasional rustling of the trees and the distant sound of cattle lowing. Beth turned to me, her eyes searching mine. “Thanks for walking me back. I don’t think I am ready to go to bed just yet.” Before I knew it, we were embracing, our bodies pressing against each other in the cool night air. We looked into each other’s eyes, and then we kissed, our lips gently brushing against each other. It felt like fireworks going off inside me. I felt my heart race and my body tingle with excitement. As we pulled away, I knew that I wanted to be with her, to hold her close and never let go. We didn’t talk about what happened next. It was like we were on the same wave length/ Beth and I made our way back to the bunkhouse, still holding hands. As we settled into bed, she snuggled up against me, and we fell asleep in each other’s arms. Nothing happened that night. We just cuddled. I was too afraid even to cop a feel while she was sleeping.
I woke up to the sound of birds chirping outside the window, and for a moment, I was disoriented. Then, the memory of last night came flooding back. I turned my head to the side and saw that Beth was still asleep, her head resting on my chest. I smiled to myself, feeling content and happy. But as I lay there with her in my arms, I couldn’t help but wonder what she saw in me. She was older, wiser, and more experienced in life than me. And yet, she seemed to genuinely like me, to be attracted to me. I wondered if it was just a fling for her, something to pass the time during her summer on the ranch. Or maybe she saw something in me that I didn’t see in myself. Whatever it was, I knew that I wanted to be with her, to explore this newfound connection we had. As I lay there lost in thought, Beth began to stir. She looked up at me and smiled, and my heart skipped a beat. We quietly got dressed and snuck out of the bunkhouse, making sure not to wake anyone up.
As we walked back to the main house, I couldn’t help but feel a bit anxious. What if someone saw us? What if they found out that Beth had spent the night with me? But Beth seemed confident and assured, and her calm demeanor helped to ease my nerves. When we reached the house, Beth gave me a quick kiss before hurrying inside. I watched her go, feeling a mixture of emotions. Part of me was relieved that we hadn’t been caught, but another part of me wished that we could have spent more time together. I sat down on the porch steps and looked out at the vast expanse of the ranch, taking in the beauty of the morning. As I sat there lost in thought, I couldn’t help but feel grateful for the chance to be here, to work on this ranch and to spend time with Beth. But deep down, I knew that this summer would come to an end eventually, and I wondered what would happen then. Would Beth go back to her college life, leaving me behind? Or would we find a way to make it work, despite our differences in age and experience? Only time would tell, but for now, I was content to bask in the warmth of the morning sun and the afterglow of our night together.
