“Hopefully she’ll come over after she gets off to snuggle with us, Stevie.”
“She’s figuring on coming directly here. She also said that Sandy’s breaking-in a new person to be evening manager, so there is light at the end of the tunnel. Oh! There’s Emily, and… oh my gawd. Toby! Ellie!”
Ellie lets go of Toby to have a hand free to stroke Steven’s sudden erection.
“(I knew that was going to be your reaction, Stevie-poo,)” she stretches up to whisper. “(You’re so bad!)”
Caroline approaches the three, “You gotta be Steven! Since you have no pockets and that certainly is no banana, the only thing I can conclude is you’re happy to see me. El? Do you mind if I take over here?”
Ellie lifts up again to chuckle into Steve’s ear, “(Toldja!)” She lets go of his cock and Caroline quickly steps in to assume this particular activity.
Steve reaches an arm around Caroline’s waist. “Especially nice to meet you, Caroline. May I offer you a beverage?”
Caroline laughs at his nonchalance, “Ellie told me you were a smooth operator. And really sweet, too. Any other guy would’ve turned into a babbling idiot if I did this to them. Sure. Chardonnay?”
“Comin’ right up. Oh. You’ll have to let go first.”
Emily and Ellie are off to the side just cracking up at the repartee.
Car laughs again, quickly lowers her hand to give Steve’s nuts an affectionate squeeze, and reaches around his waist to return the side hug. The pair steps toward the sliding screen door, Steve showing Caroline toward the bar.
Emily, Ellie, and Toby are clinging to each other, all smiles and chuckles taking in their lovers’ introduction. They are not in the least bit disappointed.
Neither are Steve and Caroline.
=====
Seated at a table in the company cafeteria, Emily has already passed through the service line and is seated at their usual spot, waiting for Jackson to join her. Mondays feature a great pastrami on rye with lots of mustard, so her tray is loaded with the tasty sandwich and a side of fries, and a “Why not?” fruit cup for dessert she pulled out of the cooler.
“Hi,” an unfamiliar voice greets from behind. “May I sit?”
Em glances around… and blanches. Uh oh. It’s the fella who saw her naked in the warehouse.
“Hi…” she manages to eke out. “Yeah.”
He takes a seat across from her.
“You’re okay,” he reassures. “We’re cool. I’m Jeff.”
“Emily. You saw me.”
“I did. Wow. I’m sure glad I did. You’re really nice to look at.”
“Thanks.”
“Why were you in there like that? I can guess you were having fun with somebody.”
“I was.”
“Anybody I might know?”
“Probably best not to go there.”
“I guess I’ll accept that. By that answer it’s probably not the regular guy I usually see you with at lunch. Now he’s your husband, right?”
“Yes.”
“So you mess around.”
“I do. Is that a problem?” She glances around at movement in her peripheral vision. “Oh, hi, sweetie.”
Jackson sets his tray on the table, takes his seat next to Em and leans in for a spousal “hello” kiss.
“Who’s your friend?” Jax inquires.
“This is Jeff. Jeff, this is Jackson. Sweetheart? Jeff is the guy who saw me in the warehouse last week.”
Jax smiles and reaches across the table for a handshake. “Glad to make your acquaintance, Jeff.”
Jeff’s eyes are as big as saucers in the realization that his conversation with Emily does not have to be shielded from Jax.
Emily chuckles, “Judging from your expression this was not what you expected. Jax and I have what’s called an ‘open marriage’. We love each other intensely, but date others when the opportunities arise.”
Jax almost chokes on the sip he’s taken from his drink, suppressing a belly laugh at Em’s soft-pedaling of what their relationship really amounts to. Em gives him the side-eye and a sly smile.
“Jeff?” Emily gets right down to the meat of her concerns. “Did anybody else see me? Or my friend?”
“Nobody said anything if they did.”
“And you didn’t, either, I take it.”
“Yeah. That’s the kind of thing nobody would believe.”
“No ring, so I guess you’re not married. Girlfriend?”
“In between.”
“Oh, I’m sorry.”
“That’s okay. It happens.”
“You aren’t thinking, are you? Now that you know?”
“A little. You are really cute.”
“Thank you, Jeff. But I can’t. Just not a good idea. One at the office is bad enough. Both of us would have been fired had we been reported to HR.”
“Oh, I understand that! Ms. Watson runs a tight ship.”
Jackson again chokes on his meal suppressing a huge laugh. Still recovering from his and Em’s time with the judge and his wife last night, he had to turn down DeeDee’s request of a lunchtime tryst at the company’s clandestine sex apartment.
Emily reacts to Jeff’s comment, “I understand she does. She’s really by-the-book.”
Jax can barely contain himself given what Em just said about their mutual lover, so before the dam bursts he rises to make a hasty exit. “Could you guys please excuse me for a moment? Nature break.”
Jeff nods. Emily’s having her own issues trying to keep a straight face, especially having intentionally triggered Jackson like she just did. She takes a deep breath to reset.
“Possible to meet on the outside?” Jeff asks.
“Also not a good idea. Those kind of relationships between co-workers are fraught. Besides, could you see yourself falling for me? You seem like more of a conventional relationship kind of guy. I’m not available in that way.”
“You know, you’re right. I could easily want you for myself. You’re a nice person and you’re beautiful.”
“Gee. Thank you, Jeff. You’re awfully nice, too. Any prospects?”
“Buddy’s trying to hook me up with his girlfriend’s sister.”
“How do you feel about that?”
“I appreciate it. His girlfriend is cute, too, so I’m hopeful.”
“Well good luck! You haven’t had lunch yet.”
“Oh gosh! Got so wound up in wanting to talk to you I forgot! Gotta meet with the crew in Warehouse 2 in fifteen minutes! I’d better go. Nice meeting you, Emily, and you don’t need to worry about me. You’re too much of a good person. Thank you for chatting with me.”
“My pleasure, Jeff. We’ll see each other around, okay?”

“Okay! You take care.”
Jeff all but jumps out of his seat, nearly running to the food line to grab something to eat on the fly.
Having noted the empty seat, Jackson returned to the table. “Are we safe?”
“Yep. Gawd, that was excruciating.”
“Don’t have to tell me that! Everything okay?”
“Yeah. He’s a nice guy, but obviously somebody whose head would explode if he knew the reality.”
“Which reality?” he chuckles.
“Any of it!” Em laughs.
“I especially had to excuse myself when he brought up Dee. I didn’t have a chance to tell you, but she wanted to fuck for lunch. And you were a real bugger for what you said! I almost lost it!”
She chuckles. “Apartment?”
“Yeah. She’s taking Saturday’s little chat with Steve, you, and Tom seriously. Anyway, I was too spent from Doris last night. Steve was absolutely right about her wearing it down into a pencil!”
“Ha! Yeah, I’m gonna miss playing hard around here, but way too much is at stake. We had to roll it back!”
“Maybe Tom and Dee’s idea will work, so all’s not lost yet. Reducing the risk is a reasonable solution.”
“I guess so. You ready?”
“Yep. Let’s dump the trash and get back to it.”
Having picked up their lunch trays, they each free a hand to hold the other’s as they make their way to the receptacles. A quick loving buss, and off they go to resume their workdays.
