“I can think of worse things, Stacey Grace.”
“Seriously, Philly. This is it. Last chance. You’re either my boyfriend now or just… just go.”
“I’ve never had a girlfriend.” I hadn’t either. Eighteen years old and never… “Just too awkward.”
“What about Anita?”
“Jeez Stace, I was like thirteen. I thought she was just being friendly. You know what I was like back then. My world was motorbikes. Girls were just smelly.”
“Well, she told everyone you guys were kissing. I punched her right in the mouth.”
“Never did. Never kissed.”
“What took you so long jerk?”
“Huh?”
“To look at me like that? To see me.”
I took the moment to stop her and pull her into my arms where it felt like she belonged. “Just stupid, I guess. You always… centre of attention… popular. Out of reach.”
“Idiot. Now get me home before I rape you in the street.”
“Ooh… Promises.” I laughed as she pulled me along.
Stace’s place is before mine, so I usually went inside to say hi to her Mum before heading home.
“Mum, I’m home!” Stace yelled into the hall. I plonked myself in my usual afternoon seat at the breakfast bar. Mrs Grace liked to feed us afternoon tea and talk about school most days as kids. “Come out here, I want to show you something.”
“Oh hi, Phillip.” She stops in the hallway and appraises us suspiciously. “I haven’t seen you for a while. Would you like a scone… What’s going on here, Stacey Jane?”
“Hahaha… Look Mum.” Stace giggles then attacks me, one arm around my neck and sweet hot lips mashed against mine. A tiny tongue teases then dances with mine and I’m so goddamned lost in the moment. Wide eyed, I watch as she pulls away, green eyes smiling softly into mine.
“Oh bub.” Mrs Grace swallows a sob and wipes her eyes. “I’m so happy for you both. Took your bloody time Phil, you drongo.”
“I’ve been told.”
“I’m calling your mum.”
“Oh god, really Mrs G?” I’m embarrassed and know that I blush hard. Almost as hard as my dick after that toe-curling kiss.
“Hell yeah, then I’m calling your father bub. He’ll be stoked.”
“Oh shame, Mum. Come on, Philly. My room. She’s so embarrassing. Oh… Mum?”
“You know the rules, bub. I’d rather you used your bedroom than-”
“Lalalalala! Shut up. Seriously, Mum. Come on Philly. I could die right now.”
“Explain these rules, Stace? Have there been lots of boys in your room? Is that why there are rules?”
“Jerkface!” She laughs and punches me in the arm hard enough to deaden it.
“So… That kiss, Philly.” She closes the door behind her and pushes me backwards. “Where’d you learn to kiss like that?”
“I… Uh… never…”
“Me either.” She is frowning as she lies beside me on the bed. “I did some stuff with…”
“Ronny?” There were rumours they were a thing for a little while.
“Yeah… kissed. He wanted… I…”
“Oh!” I realised she was telling me she was a virgin. “Me too. I’ve never…”
She was hiding her face in my chest and talking, so I cradled her head and ran my fingers along her braids.
“I want to though.” She mumbled into my chest.
“Well, when you’re ready, Stace. No pressure.”
She bounced right up and straddled me, beaming. “Now, Philly. I want to right now. Ok?”
I tried to nod but our lips met and her body moulded on top of mine and I swam in the smell of her skin and the taste of her.
“I’ve wanted to…” She breathed and kissed me again.
“So long now…”
“Stupid…”
She was tugging at my zip. That’s all I knew about clothes coming off and then she hissed.
“Shhhh… fuck. Don’t move.”
I was inside a woman. Nothing compared to it. It was so outrageously intimate and stimulating at the same time. This was my friend Stace. I was in her body. Emotion overwhelmed me as she slumped down hard on me and nipped kisses at my jaw and lips while her insides trembled and twitched.
“I love you, Philly. Always have. Didn’t you know?”
“Maybe I’m stupid, Stace.”
“Now is when you tell me you love me too, jerkface.”
And I did. My heart had loved her forever as my closest friend, all it took was a look at the solution and the problem suddenly made sense.
“I love you too, Stace.”
“You’re just saying…” She straightened up and smirked at me as she moved me inside her. “that, because you’re getting lucky.”
“Oh god, Stace. If you keep moving…” Was all the warning I could get out before I started shooting off inside her. “So sorry… So sorry…”
“Shh, Philly. Shh. Stay right there, don’t move. It’s okay.” She snuggled down hard on me and nestled into my neck. “It’s not a porno. It’s just us. This is perfect. We have heaps of time to practice.”
Dinner was awkward. Everyone kept smirking. Mostly us. We held hands under the table and I don’t think there was a single person at the table who didn’t know exactly what we’d been doing and were going to do again and again until we perfected it.
That was twenty-two years ago now.
And we’ve had problems since, but we’ve always found solutions when we looked at them together.
